How Extra Hockey Training Can Help Young Players Improve Their Skills
For young hockey players, regular team practices are an important part of learning the game—but sometimes kids want more opportunities to work on their individual skills. Extra hockey training can give young players the time and repetition they need to improve their technique, build confidence and become more comfortable with the puck.
At West-End Cavendish Athletic Club in Montreal, hockey players have access to a dedicated simulated ice rink where they can work on their skills outside of regular practices and games.
Why Extra Hockey Practice Can Make a Difference
During a typical team practice, coaches need to divide their attention among many players while covering different drills, systems and game situations. That means there may be limited time for a child to repeatedly work on one specific skill.
Additional hockey training gives young players more opportunities to focus on areas they want to improve.
This can include stickhandling, shooting, passing, puck control, coordination and quick hands. Repeating these skills regularly can help movements become more natural and allow players to gradually increase their speed and confidence.
More Time With the Puck
One of the most valuable things a young hockey player can get is simply more time handling the puck.
Practicing stickhandling and puck-control drills gives kids an opportunity to experiment, make mistakes and try again without the pressure of a game. Over time, that repetition can help players become more comfortable controlling the puck while moving, changing direction or preparing to shoot.
For beginners, the focus may be on basic control. More experienced youth players can use extra training to challenge themselves with faster or more complex drills.
Building Better Shooting Skills
Kids love scoring goals, but developing a good shot takes practice.
Extra hockey training allows young players to repeat their shooting technique more frequently than they may be able to during a regular practice. Players can work on accuracy, release, hand positioning and different types of shots while gradually developing better technique.
The goal isn’t necessarily to shoot harder right away. Learning proper mechanics and becoming more accurate can provide a stronger foundation as a player develops.
Confidence Matters Too
Skill development isn’t only physical. When kids feel more comfortable with their abilities, they may also become more confident on the ice.
A player who has spent additional time practicing puck control or shooting may feel more prepared to use those skills during a game. That confidence can make hockey more enjoyable and encourage young athletes to continue challenging themselves.
